Homicide is the number one cause of death for Chicago residents between the ages of 1 and 34.  Statewide, homicide is the leading cause of death for blacks between the ages of 15 and 34, and it is the second most frequent cause of death for all young people between the ages of 15 and 24.  Approximately 80 percent of the killings in Chicago are the result of shootings, with most victims under the age of 30.

The Chicago Project for Violence Prevention was formed in 1995 as a strategic public health initiative to support community-based violence prevention.  CeaseFire is one of its initiatives.   Although CeaseFire funding has been cut statewide, The Woodlawn Organization Violence Interrupters (funded by NCP Woodlawn) still utilize CeaseFire tactics and strategies when combating violence in the Woodlawn community and remains quite effective.
